Navigating the Holidays
The holidays and traveling can be very difficult for a family. Having or managing a child with special needs or sociocultural struggles adds another layer of preparation for this season.
Here are some tips to better navigate the holidays for kids with Special Needs:
Routine- try to keep the waking and going to bed routines the same. Bookending their days with a normal routine will help them to feel a sense of normalcy.
Communicate- with friends and family. Especially with those that you may not see often, let them be familiar with what the care and support your child needs.
Bring along their favorite item- being able to bring their comfort item or sensory tool will help them to feel safe and can help lower stress.
Create a sensory/comfort backpack- favorite snacks, books, coloring activities, fidget tools, headphones, electronic devices (if needed)
Here are some tips to better navigate the holidays for kids with Sociocultural Struggles (ie adoption/foster/separated families):
Different Traditions - be aware that a kid may do holidays different than your family does. Be a student and learn how they celebrate holidays while also sharing some of your family’s traditions.
Behavior Reactions - holidays can sometimes trigger negative memories leading to behavior outbursts. Be transparent about possibility during this season, but also establish a plan just in case (ie. safe place).
